Morgan Makes History as the First Avila Woman to Top 2,000 Points
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Matti Morgan made history in Mabee Fieldhouse in a game versus Ottawa University, becoming the first player in Avila women's basketball history - and just the second Eagle basketball player - to ever score 2,000 points in their career. Scoring a game-high 19 points as part of yet another double-double, and her Eagles shut down the Ottawa offense, permitting the Braves to shoot just 27% from the field as a team in a 60-48 win on Monday evening. Fresh off becoming the team's all-time leading scorer at Oklahoma Wesleyan, Morgan quickly began her pursuit of her next milestone, needing only ten points to crack the 2,000-point plateau. She swiftly scored seven points, nearly matching Ottawa's team total, in the first ten minutes, along with four rebounds and three steals, and Avila built an 18-8 lead after one quarter. With less than two minutes to play in the half, Morgan hit a pull-up baseline jumper to extend Avila's lead to 15 and bring her career total to 2,000 points, joining Hall of Famer Sedrick Johnson as the only two Eagle basketball players to ever hit that mark in their careers. Morgan finished the game leading all players with 19 points and 13 rebounds, her fifth double-double this season, along with four steals in another marquee night for the greatest scorer in Avila women's basketball history. Morgan, who graduated in May 2021, had another season of eligibility due to Covid-19. She also works as full-time as a registered nurse at St. Luke's Mid America Heart Institute and at Avila University on her masters degree.
